Resilient Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl, often known as resilient vinyl, or sheet vinyl, is an affordable flooring solution. Resilient Vinyl offers a vast array of choices when it comes to color and design. Its ease of installation, versatility, low maintenance, attractiveness, and high durability make vinyl a cost-conscious flooring choice.

Resilient flooring has been around for decades - but this certainly isn't your grandmother's floor. Only Mannington resilient is made with recycled content; uses innovative technology, and showcases the best styles and designs in the industry. Combine that with easy maintenance and best-in-class warranty and you have a floor you can love.

Resilient flooring is made from vinyl, linoleum, cork, polyurethane, rubber, and asphalt composites, though vinyl is by far the most common. In fact, the industry uses the term "resilient" to refer to vinyl.
Resilient flooring is not only constructed from several materials, but it also comes in a huge variety of colors, patterns, and surface textures. Many kinds are given a protective surface layer that shines, so they don't require waxing.

Resilient flooring may be applied over a variety of surfaces, including plywood and concrete. And, as long as the surface is flat and sound, it may be applied over existing floors such as wood or linoleum.
Though resilient flooring is very durable, styles change and it does tend to show wear over the long run. Most of the time, it needs to be replaced every 10 years or so, depending on the amount of wear and tear it receives.

One of the most popular kitchen and bathroom flooring materials is resilient tile, a surface that is highly water-repellent, moderately priced, slip-resistant, and easy to install.

Resilient Vinyl Construction

There are typically four typical layers to Resilient Vinyl:

Protective top coat: This coat is urethane or another high-performance top coat which makes the product easy to clean and resist scratches and scuffs.

Protective clear vinyl layer: This layer adds durability and can protect against rips, tears and gouges. The thicker this layer, the better the performance. The flooring's appearance retention and durability is mostly dependent on the quality and thickness of the clear wear layer.

Printed vinyl design layer: The rotogravure printing process offers an unlimited range of patterns and designs, including very realistic interpretations of natural materials.

Backing: The backing layer can be made of either felt or vinyl encapsulated fiberglass. How sheet vinyl flooring can be installed is determined by the backing.

Felt: Felt bottom layer that is adhered to the subfloor. Currently its the most common of sheet vinyl floors today.

Fiberglass: A structural layer of fiberglass with vinyl above and below adds more dimensionally stability. A vinyl cushion backing provides added underfoot comfort. This floor lays flat and can be installed without glue.

Lifestyle & Performance

You can use Resilient Vinyl virtually anywhere in your home. Since it can be installed below grade level, it makes an excellent choice for basements.

* Although vinyl is waterproof, the installation adhesive is water-soluble. Do not over-expose vinyl floors to water around the perimeter or near any seams.

* Thicker is better! If you plan to install vinyl flooring in a high traffic area or in a primary bathroom, or if the floor needs to withstand wear from children and pets, choose a thicker vinyl with a urethane or enhanced urethane wear layer.

* Avoid using sheet vinyl on stairs, as it is meant for flat, level surfaces.

Resilient Vinyl Buying Tips

The quality and price of vinyl flooring depends on four important factors which you should consider before purchasing vinyl:

* Surface Appearance

* Ease of Maintenance

* Resistance to Tears, Indentations, Scuffs and Scratches

* Underfoot Comfort

Other important factors to consider:

* High traffic areas need more durable vinyl

* Labor is a significant cost of a vinyl installation so buying less expensive materials but then having to reinstall it, often does not save you money in the long run.

* Sheet Vinyl comes in 6’ & 12’ widths.

* The backing layer can be made of either felt or fiberglass with a cushion backing. How sheet vinyl flooring can be installed is determined by the backing.
